FIREMAN IS INJURED.

LIEUT. EMMET MULLANE FALLS THROUGH POLE HOLE IN STATION - CONDITION IS SERIOUS.

Lieut. Emmet Mullane, of the fire department, is in a serious condition at St. Barnabas hospital as the result of an accident which occurred at 2 o'clock yesterday morning.

The fireman was formerly a member of Truck company 3, but was raised to a lieutenancy Friday. He was temporarily assigned to Engine company 17, Chicago avenue and Thirty-fifth street. When awakened to go on watch he fell through the pole hole in the floor of the sleeping room, striking heavily on the apparatus floor.

At the hospital it was found he had sustained a compound fracture of his right arm at the elbow, and also had broken his right hip. He will be incapacitated for a long time.

Mullane was severely injured about 18 months ago, when he and Chief Hanley drove into a tree in the roadway while on their way to a fire.
